Present situation
The costs for providing and maintenance of application systems and the necessary environments are, unlike the actual development costs, often strongly underestimated. Increasingly complex highly distributed applications systems on one hand and heterogeneous target platforms on the other hand lead to a risen expenditure for administration.
This results in a continuously growing gap between the software development and administration.
Moreover, application providing often takes place in an uncoordinated way and is difficult to reproduce. Software is rather "kept alive" than kept in a provisionable and therefore reproducible way.
The quality and efficiency of the providing process have direct influence on the acceptance of the complete system. The lack of reproducibility and automation does not allow for any improvement of quality and increase of efficiency.
Without an adequate process and a certain degree of automation, the provisioning and support of application systems becomes impossible to manage.
Objective/challenge
The challenge is to ensure a concept and implementation of individual software distribution algorithms at an early stage. The objective herein is to provide complete software stacks in an automated and consistently reproducible way. Prerequisites are processes and organizational measures imbedded in the software development projects, enabling an early start in planning of an efficient software distribution. The deterministic processes for software provisioning increase the consistency of the software systems provided. In addition, iterative error analysis and improvements increase the quality of the processes in a sustainable way.
